Mount Kilimanjaro - Machame Route

6 Days 5 Nights


Machame is the second most popular route on the mountain. The route  takes approximately six days and starts in the south-west of the Mountain at the Machame Gate. The descent is down Mweka, southeastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Machame offers great views and visits to stunning places such as Shira Plateau, Barranco and Lava Tower.

The Route leads through forest, moorland, semi desert landscape and alpine desert.

Machame is ideal for those, who are capable of hiking over extended periods of time on sometimes steep terrain.

day 1

Machame Gate – Machame Camp

In the morning we will leave Arusha and drive towards the Machame Gate, where we will start the trekking.

Hiking time: 5-7 hours
Altitude: 1.640m/5.380ft – 2.850m/9.350ft

Machame Camp – Shira 2 Camp

Hiking time: 4-6 hours
Altitude: 2.850m/9.350ft – 3.810m/12.500ft

Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco camp

Hiking time: 6-8 hours
Altitude: 3.810m/12.500ft – 4.630m/15.190ft – 3.976m/13.044ft

Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Hiking time: 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, 7 – 8 hours to descend to Mweka

Mweka camp – Mweka Gate

Hiking time: 3 hours
Altitude: 3.086m/10.065ft – 1.640m/5.380m
After descending you will be picked up from your driver and drive back to Arusha.
